ACCION EAST RECEIVES $1.75 MILLION FROM CDFI FUND premium

Vida'sAtlier

Vida’s shop sells dresses for special occasions—proms, quinceaneras and weddings. She’s been doing this a long time; her mom owned a shop just like hers when she was growing up in Nicaragua. Today, Vida’s own shop in Miami supports her and her young son, and employs two people. “It can be challenging, balancing being a mom, wife and a strong business owner,” says Vida. When Vida needed financing to purchase some new equipment for the store, she didn’t have many options. She was too small for bank financing and her cash flow wasn’t consistent.

She was referred to Accion by her bank, where she did qualify for a loan. Her business is growing, and soon she may be ready for an even larger loan. Thanks to a recent grant from the Community Development Financial Institution Fund, Accion will be there for Vida when she’s ready to grow.

FLOUNDER BREWING WINS EXPERIENCESHIP FROM SAM ADAMS premium

Congrats to Flounder Brewing Company, winner of the 2016 Brewing the American Dream Craft Brewer Experienceship!

In 2005, Flounder along with his brothers and cousin began experimenting with brewing in Flounder’s apartment and then expanded to the garage of their 90 year old Ukrainian grandmother, Babi. Their grandfather, a beekeeper and the original artisan in the family, was the inspiration for the Flounder Brewing Company’s flagship beer, Hill Street Honey Blonde Ale. The brothers and cousin sought out a $6,000 loan from Brewing the American Dream when they decided to purchase a small system and move from a garage to a nano-brewery of their own in Hillsborough, NJ. Flounder Brewing has continued to grow and now has more than ten seasonal and year-round craft beers and will be expanding and hiring their first employees in early 2016.

“This is our fifth Brewing and Business Experienceship, and the program continues

LOVE: A NECESSARY INGREDIENT FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP premium

Maria Canellas Quote

Most forty year olds would consider their career path charted. Not Maria Canellas. She came to the United States from Honduras at 37 years old with an appetite for self- accomplishment and personal success.

In just six years in Miami, Maria had earned her associates degree in Tourism and Travel studies while gaining experience working for various travel agencies. She had a way with people and it was apparent in her career success.

“I was contributing so much to other agencies, especially for the last agency I worked for. Despite working from home, I was still able to bring a lot of clients to them all.”

All this changed when Maria met her former boss and mentor, Lucy. They met when Maria had a job selling airline tickets to vendors. One day, Lucy asked Maria to join her staff. Although Maria had a lot to learn, Lucy knew that taking

Tia of Tia’s Cakes and Pastries

Every morning Tia spends an hour planning. She writes down grocery items like birthday candles and decorative crystals that ensure that her cakes are unforgettable. As a one-person business, Tia’s Cakes and Pastries demands a lot of work and Tia handles every aspect.

For the first few years, Tia ran the pastry business out of her kitchen but it was a liability. “In Boston, you’re not supposed to cook from home. I had learned of incubator spaces like Crop Circle before, but couldn’t afford rent and insurance. That was my goal”

That was Accion’s goal for Tia too: to help her formalize, stabilize and grow her business. With grant support from the Massachusetts Growth Capital Corporation, we did just that. Generous grant support allowed us to spend over 825 hours working with Tia and another 165 small business.

QUALITY ORGANIC FOODS ON WHEELS premium

190484_535981229777304_2032795162_n

When you are a food truck owner, many things can go wrong. “There are going to be things that are going to sway you, that can come at you all at once and it can be really rough for you. You just have to stick with it and keep your faith.” That’s Genea’s advice for entrepreneurs that are new to the food truck industry.

Since starting Brooklyn Organic Coffee and Tea, Genea has dealt with broken generators, stolen machinery, limits on city permits and strict health standards.

After working for a health and wellness company, Genea developed a desire to help others make changes in lifestyle and food choices. This desire helped inspire her to start Brooklyn Organic Coffee and Tea.

“I noticed that many of the food truck options around were fried foods. I wanted to provide an alternative,” explained Genea.
