Three women entrepreneurs who broke the $500k revenue barrier premium

Women are founding businesses at unprecedented rates – 2.5 times the national average according to the National Women’s Business Council. Still, women-owned businesses have a lot of ground to make up in order to gain an equal footing with their peers. Although women-owned businesses made up 36 percent of the country’s businesses in 2012, they accounted for just four percent of revenues and seven percent of private sector employment. A 2013 report issued by the Small Business Administration found that the major constraint limiting the growth of small businesses, especially women and minority-owned businesses, is inadequate access to financing.

Accion Fast Track Program graduates share in successes and learning premium

Seventeen business owners from across the country convened in New York City on Thursday to graduate from this year’s Fast Track program. Fast Track is made possible by Accion’s partnership with Capital One and the Blackstone Charitable Foundation and provides a select group of 26 Accion clients with intensive business training, coaching and mentoring to accelerate their business growth. The curriculum included a two-day in-person intensive training session at the beginning of the program, 20 virtual coaching sessions provided by People Biz, Inc. and mentorship pairing through BusinessAdvising.org. The culminating event of the Fast Track program brought participants together with the broader Accion community to share learnings and hear from experts such as the event’s keynote speaker, urban revitalization strategy consultant Majora Carter.

On any given morning, Suzanna Cameron of Stems finds herself at a local flower market by 6 a.m. selecting the brightest, most unique flowers for the day ahead. Stems, a flower shop located within a bar in Brooklyn, New York has seen sales double in the last year, hired three full time employees and is looking to expand to an additional two locations. Suzanna is an Accion client who was selected to be part of our new leadership and business accelerator program, Fast Track, which is supported by Capital One and the Blackstone Charitable Foundation. Congratulations to Accion client and Fast Track program participant Wendy Carver for her business, Hollingworth Candies, winning the Business of the Year award from the Chamber of Commerce in Lockport, Illinois! After seeing her sales increase this year, Wendy opened a second larger manufacturing facility in Lockport to meet the growing demand for her delicious toffee, candy, and chocolates.

BLACKSTONE CHARITABLE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES $4.5 MILLION GRANT TO BRING BLACKSTONE LAUNCHPAD TO FIVE NEW YORK UNIVERSITIES premium

On Friday, October 23rd at New York University’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts Accion’s partner, The Blackstone Charitable Foundation announced its campus entrepreneurship program, Blackstone LaunchPad, is coming to five universities across New York. This program gives students access to business coaching, lectures, networking events and other resources to help get their business ideas off the ground.  Through LaunchPad, Blackstone hopes to create a network of entrepreneurs on college campuses so students may consider entrepreneurship as a viable career path. Currently, the Blackstone LaunchPad program supports student entrepreneurship in Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, Montana, California, and Ireland.  As the eighth and largest expansion of the program, this three-year, $4.5 million grant will begin a partnership with Cornell University, New York University, Syracuse University, University at Albany (SUNY), and University at Buffalo (SUNY) to provide entrepreneurial support and to help create a network of entrepreneurs for over 180,000 students.  Speakers …

HISTORICAL CRAFT BEER MEETS ARTISTIC URBAN GARDEN premium

Who would have thought of pairing old school beers with art and cultural programming? Accion client ChuckAlek has done just that through a partnership with Art Produce. ChuckAlek Independent Brewers is opening ChuckAlek Biergarten, a tasting room located in North Park, California. (Yeah, we love the name too!) The unique partnership will ultimately blend “old school beers for new school palates” with the artistic garden, which hosts film screenings and performances, as well as community events.
