Celebrating Accion Days in San Antonio

“Whereas, Accion International and the Accion U.S. Network will hold their Annual Board Meeting in San Antonio, Texas, June 19-21, 2013; and
Whereas, Accion is a global non-profit organization dedicated to building a financially inclusive world with access to economic opportunity for all; and
Whereas, the Accion U.S. Network is the largest micro and small business-lending network in the United States; and
Whereas, Accion Texas Inc., founded in San Antonio in 1994, is the largest member of the Accion U.S. Network; and is committed to empowering diverse individuals and small businesses that have limited access to tradition sources of capital; and
Whereas, the Accion organization believes every individual can seize the opportunity to access a full range of high-quality, affordable financial services; achieve real economic gains; and build a brighter future for themselves and their families.”

With those words Julián Castro, San Antonio city mayor declared June 19-21 as “Accion Days” in the city of San Antonio.

We were honored by the welcome from Mayor Castro and the City of San Antonio as the 7 Accion CEOs convened in the Alamo City for the Accion U.S. Network and Accion Internationalboard meetings. The three days spent in San Antonio were jam packed with events, visits business owners, who had received a loan from Accion Texas and some very exciting conversations.

One of the central topics of conversation, echoed various times during both board meetings, was bringing microfinance to scale in the United States. We were happy to present the strategies the Accion U.S. Network will be implementing in the coming year, working to make the goal of scale a reality.

“It was an historic gathering, a first of its kind in Accion’s history in the US.  And the timing couldn’t have been better. Every member of the Accion U.S. Network is growing, strong and healthy. Each is committed to innovations that will enable Accion to serve more and more small business owners across the country. And the U.S. Network team is engaged in raising funds, sharing knowledge across the members, and contributing to the creative spirit that defines the work we do,”  commented Gina Harman, CEO of the Accion U.S. Network.

All in all it was an excellent and productive meeting and we can’t wait until the next!
