Life is not always predictable but it can be managed with an understanding company and a flexible schedule. According to the workers interviewed for the FIELD study, a stable and yet flexible schedule is key to managing work-life responsibilities. While a job is vital to life, workers described juggling childcare, second jobs, and education commitments in their lives as well. With 29% of those interviewed working more than one job, the stability from the microenterprises was important in order to better manage other personal responsibilities. Stable schedules were reported by 80% of workers, and 87% reported having flexibility in their schedules which prove to be vital in their work-life balance.

A good job creates opportunity. The workers who struggle most to find opportunities include seniors, immigrants, workers without college degrees, and people with disabilities. Small firms are able to fill niches in the labor market, where opportunity is difficult for a diverse group of individuals who may otherwise face difficulties accessing good jobs. Workers interviewed spoke of the distinct value created by the microenterprise by facilitating a variety of opportunities for growth and advancement.

FIELD at the Aspen Institute set out not only to illuminate how microenterprises contribute to not only job creation and economic opportunity, but to find the traits that constitute a good job. The qualitative study was designed and implemented by FIELD, with over 100 interviews conducted by researchers across five cities.
